Bench Time #131: Stone Walls & Rock Falls
Friday Jun 12, 2020
Friday Jun 12, 2020
On episode 131 Todd & Brett talk about some weathering techniques for a stone wall that Brett made from Sterling Models (Brett is working on a YouTube video, it will be up this weekend!) It started with the plain hydrocal wall and we discuss the different layers that were applied to get the achieved result. Starting with some India ink wash and wrapping up with some basic acrylic colors. This is a simple way to make a kick-ass wall for your model railroad layout.
The wall molds we’re talking about are from Sterling Models, you can find them here: http://sterlingmodels.com/rock-molds/ (non-affiliate link)
We’ve got a few other surprises tucked away in this week’s show including a new upcoming Zoom call for Patrons, contests, and more!

Bench Time #125: Let's Get Weird with The Wiley's
Thursday Apr 30, 2020
Thursday Apr 30, 2020
This week we go off the tracks quite a bit so join us as we talk about pretty much anything and everything.
Oh yeah, you may also begin to notice some changes with our look, we changed the name up to Wiley's Scale Modeling because that's what it is, just my dad and I having fun and building a model railroad together all while sharing our adventures in working together with you. Obviously we'll still have some friends and other modelers on the show, but we found the name change fitting and appropriate.
We also picked up quite a few new patrons and I'll be resuming the Patreon page after our month break in April. If you'd like to support me and the podcast, you can visit The Patreon Page Here.
Finally, make sure you get those votes in for our contest before Midnight on May 1st, vote here!

Well, last week was the official weathering podcast and we decided this is an awesome way to theme our weekly shows, so this week is the official sign episode!
There were a blockbuster number of guests on the show this week including Dave Kruiswyk, Frank Varga, Jason Jensen, Jake Johnson & Doug Foscale. Well, and of course yours truly Brett & Todd Wiley.
We covered everything from font usage, different styles of signs, era of signage, weathering signs, and applying signs to buildings. Discussed were rooftop signs, wall signs, painted signs, window signs and so much more! We hope you take some good signage tips from this one.
Some of the Facebook Groups & Pages that we talked about that you need to check out if you aren't already members of them are:
- Model Railroad Structures & Scenery - This is where you can find Frank's sweet sign we all talked about!
- Model Railroad Signs, Graphics & Designs - This is the sign group that Jake talked about in the closing.
- Dave's Workbench
- Jason Jensen Trains

Bench Time #123: Doug Foscale of FOS Scale Models - The Weathering Episode
Get a pencil and some notepads out, because this one’s full of takeaways!
This is the weathering episode with Doug Foscale and we dig deep into some of our favorite weathering techniques. It was a blast to pick Doug’s brain a bit and get some methods from him.
Some of the model weathering techniques we cover include:
- Use of a brown sharpie for rust and grime weathering + other sharpies
- Bragdon and chalk dust weathering favorites
- Working with AK Asphalt and some of the AK Interactive muds
- Weathering board-by-board construction for a beaten and worn down board look
- Making stains with burnt umber paint & mineral spirits
- Using a grout sponge for painting
- Doug’s Favorite: Weathering sea walls
- Crumbling concrete walls w/rebar& deterioration
- Scratch builds & scratch building materials
We also cover some questions from our patrons, which were also packed with some great discussion points!
